National Peace Officers Memorial Day PDF Print E-mail

145 law enforcement officers made the ultimate sacrifice in 2006,  and this Tuesday we remember them and honor their dedication and service to their communities. This year National Peace Officers Memorial Day will be particularly poignant as we remember Cpl. Bruce McKay of the Franconia Police Department, killed in the line of duty this past Friday. We also remember Manchester Officer Michael Briggs , killed in the line of duty in October of 2006.

May 15 has been National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week containing May 15 has been National Police Week , since President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 on October 1, 1962.

The number of officers killed in the line of duty last year declined nearly 8 percent from 2005, when there were 157 officer deaths. The 2006 figure was the lowest annual total since 1999, when 143 officers were lost.
